Kossaks flag
Material: The work is constructed from small square modules made of wood and ceramic. Modern ceramic tile, historical Hugo Gehlin ceramics (c. 1948) Arranged in a pixel-like mosaic structure, the tactile surface emphasizes manual assembly, material diversity and subtle variations of color and texture. Object: The composition depicts a stylized flag associated with Cossack cultural symbolism. Built from fragmented geometric units, the form appears both structured and dynamic, suggesting movement, signal and coded visual language. The modular construction recalls digital graphics while remaining firmly rooted in handcrafted materiality. Concept: As part of the ongoing project “Pixel, Memory and Mosaic,” the work explores how cultural identity and historical memory can be translated into contemporary visual systems. The flag becomes a metaphor for belonging, resilience and transformation. By merging traditional symbolic imagery with the logic of digital pixels, the artist reflects on migration, continuity and the reconstruction of meaning from dispersed fragments.
